Why shouldn't your baby inherit your mattress?

¿Por qué tu bebé no debe heredar el colchón?

One of the reasons your baby should not inherit a mattress is because the mattress is the main source of contamination for our baby. Although it may seem like an economical solution to pass a used mattress from one child to another, or even from one family member to another, it is better to invest in a new mattress that is safe for the baby and meets the recommended safety and health standards.

3 reasons why it's not good for your baby to inherit a mattress

  1. For hygiene: Mattresses accumulate dust mites, dead skin cells, sweat, and other debris with use and over time. This can trigger allergies and health problems in babies whose immune systems are still developing. Logically, the older the mattress, the more mites it will accumulate.
  2. Risk of suffocation: Used mattresses may have deformities or sagging that pose a risk of suffocation for a small baby. In addition, they may contain hazardous materials if they are worn or torn.
  3. Adequate firmness: Babies need firm mattresses to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). A used mattress may have lost its firmness over time, increasing the risk of suffocation or entrapment for the baby.

To ensure that our children sleep safely and comfortably, it is essential that they have a new mattress that meets all current safety standards. Although it may seem like a minor issue, in recent years there have been significant advances in the design of mattresses for babies and children that are better suited to their ergonomics and development, contributing to their rest and overall well-being.

Can I reuse my first child's mattress?

You may be considering giving your child a used mattress that does not come from a stranger, but from their own older sibling. Although it is preferable for each child to have a new mattress, the risks associated with used mattresses are reduced when they come from the same household, although they do not disappear completely.

It all depends on the condition of the mattress. It is essential that it is in good condition, maintains its firmness, and is clean.

How can I keep the mattress in good condition?

If you are considering letting your second child inherit the first child's mattress, you should take special care in how you store it at home. Ideally, the mattress should not be stored between uses, which would reduce the risk of moisture. But if this is not the case, you can follow these tips:

  1. Air it out after use and wash the cover. Make sure it is completely dry before putting it back on or store it separately.
  2. Wrap it in breathable plastic that is not too thick to prevent moisture as much as possible.
  3. Place it horizontally. This may require more space. If we place the mattress vertically for a long time, gravity could damage the materials.
  4. Store it in a dark, dry place. Do not store it in a damp place, such as near the floor or ceiling, or in garages or storage rooms where moisture accumulates.
  5. When you are going to reuse the mattress, we recommend airing it out for several hours beforehand.
