Sleep and breastfeeding: are they related?

Sueño y lactancia materna, ¿tienen relación?

The answer is yes. Breastfeeding is related to babies' sleep. During the first months of life, babies need to eat frequently to grow and be healthy, which is why they do not sleep for many hours at a time during the night. They take short naps throughout the day so they can wake up and eat when they need to. Breastfeeding fits perfectly with this feeding and sleeping pattern.

Frequent feedings increase prolactin receptors in the breast, which means more milk production. Prolactin also has a relaxing effect on the mother and makes her sleepy. Plus, breast milk has an amino acid (L-tryptophan) that helps you sleep, so breastfeeding will also help your baby sleep more peacefully. Sucking on the breast is relaxing for the baby and helps them fall asleep more easily.

It is important not to give babies heavy foods or try to establish rigid feeding schedules, as this can affect their natural sleep patterns. The best thing for their sleep is breastfeeding and sleeping together (co-sleeping). At this stage, attachment is essential. This makes them feel calmer and more secure. They can feed when they need to and sleep better, which promotes their natural development in every way.

5 reasons why breastfeeding helps sleep

  1. Complete and personalized nutrition: Breast milk is like a magic formula designed specifically for your baby. It contains all the essential nutrients your baby needs to grow healthy and strong. Easily available and ready for your baby, it quickly satisfies your baby's hunger, and you don't have to worry about preparing bottles during the night!
  2. Special emotional bond: When you breastfeed, an incredible bond is created between you and your baby. It is an intimate and loving moment where you both connect emotionally. This closeness and connection can provide a sense of security and tranquility for the baby, promoting more relaxed sleep.
  3. Relaxing hormones: During breastfeeding, the mother's body produces hormones such as oxytocin, which make her feel relaxed and happy. It's like a shot of love for both of you! These hormones also have a calming effect on your baby, helping them fall asleep and rest better.
  4. Circadian rhythm: Breast milk contains melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. By feeding your baby breast milk, you help them develop their circadian rhythm, meaning they know when it's time to sleep and when it's time to be awake, and they develop more regular sleep patterns.
  5. Deeper, more restful sleep: Breastfed babies have been found to wake up less often at night than formula-fed babies. Breast milk is easy to digest and better meets the nutritional needs of babies, allowing them to sleep for longer periods. That also means you can get more rest! By sleeping more deeply, your baby will be more energetic and happy during the day.

Breastfeeding, until when?

The natural age for weaning is between 2.5 and 7 years old. In fact, the entire process of sleep development in babies occurs approximately during the time that breastfeeding lasts. It's as if the two were designed to complement each other!

So, if you are breastfeeding your little one, keep in mind that in addition to providing nutrition and affection, you are also helping in the natural development of their sleep. We encourage you to continue enjoying this wonderful stage with your baby.
