Is it good to rock your baby to sleep in your arms?

¿Es bueno dormir al bebé en brazos?

Some people will tell you that rocking your baby to sleep in your arms is bad practice, as it is mistakenly believed that you can spoil them and that it does not help them to fall asleep on their own in their crib, as they will always need to be held in order to sleep.

However, if your baby demands to sleep with you, you should not worry. It is normal for babies, especially in the first months of life, to sleep better and longer if they do so next to you.

It should be noted that babies require attention and care, and are totally dependent on their parents for survival. The way they feel most secure is through physical contact. That is why many of them cry for their parents' attention when they feel lonely at night. They cry because they need to feel the warmth of your chest and arms, hear your voice, and even smell your scent. Rocking a baby to sleep in your arms is a natural gesture for parents and necessary for babies.

Arms strengthen their safety

There is no risk of creating bad habits in your little one if they can only fall asleep in your arms, especially during the first six months of life. On the contrary, it is beneficial as it will help strengthen their inner security.

In fact, a baby's body is designed to sleep in someone's arms. A newborn's back is still curved, just as it was when it was inside its mother's womb. It is not good to straighten it suddenly. That is why arms are the best option for sleeping babies.

Similarly, when they are in the womb, babies feel their mother at all times through her heartbeat, hearing her voice, feeling her breath, etc. That is why they need their mother's arms to feel that sensation they experienced before birth, a feeling of complete safety and tranquility.

It is a natural process that does not last forever.

Don't worry, they won't always need you. As they grow, develop emotionally, and become more independent, babies show greater detachment from their parents.

Their sleep and wake cycles will become more regular, and they will need less and less of your lullabies or hugs to fall asleep. This is a natural process that cannot be rushed, although it is true that every baby matures at a different pace, and what takes some a few months may take others years.

To accompany you in this process, we recommend that you arm yourself with patience and love. What is certain is that the day will come when they will no longer need your arms to sleep.

However, if you notice that despite your care and Mimo, your baby is not sleeping well, they may be experiencing a sleep disorder. If this is the case, we recommend that you consult your pediatrician for a more thorough assessment.
