How heat affects your baby's sleep and what to do to help them

Cómo el calor afecta el sueño de tu bebé y qué hacer para ayudarlo

During the warmer months of the year, many parents notice that their babies wake up more than usual, are restless, or even cry for no apparent reason. In many cases, the cause is related to heat and difficulty maintaining an adequate body temperature during sleep.

Overheating at night can not only interfere with your baby's rest, but it can also cause discomfort and increase certain risks during the night. That's why knowing how to identify the signs and adapt the sleeping environment is key to ensuring safe, restful, and peaceful sleep.

Signs that your baby is too hot while sleeping

Although every baby is different, there are some common signs that may indicate that they are too hot at night. One of the most common is waking up with a sweaty body, especially on the neck, back, or chest. They may also have redness on their face, feel uncomfortable, or cry more frequently during the night.

Other less obvious indicators may include difficulty falling asleep or waking up earlier than usual. If their skin feels damp or very hot to the touch, it is advisable to check the temperature of the room and their sleepwear.

What is the ideal temperature for your baby's rest?

Pediatric specialists recommend keeping the baby's room between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius. This temperature range allows the baby's body to regulate heat well during sleep without the risk of getting cold or overheating. If you use a fan or air conditioner, it is important that the air flow does not point directly at the baby and that the room is well ventilated but without drafts.

Tips for improving sleep on hot nights

One of the most important aspects is the choice of clothing. Opt for lightweight garments made of natural fabrics such as cotton or bamboo, which allow for good breathability. Avoid unnecessary coats, thick blankets, or decorative items in the crib, such as stuffed animals or padded protectors, which can trap heat and hinder air circulation.

The choice of mattress also plays a key role. A mattress that does not allow adequate breathability can accumulate heat and moisture, causing an uncomfortable temperature that affects the baby's rest.

Mattresses designed for a cool night's sleep

At ECUS Kids, we have developed mattresses specifically designed to prevent overheating and promote healthy sleep. Models such as Care® Ultimate incorporate cool fabrics and highly breathable foams that regulate the baby's body temperature throughout the night. In addition, they are registered with the health authorities and are free of harmful substances.

Another ideal option for the hot months is the Oxsi mattress, with a side specially designed for summer. Its open-pore structure allows for constant ventilation, which reduces sweating and keeps the mattress surface cool and dry.

A cool environment is also a safe environment.

Controlling the temperature and taking care of the materials your baby sleeps with is much more than a matter of comfort. A cool and suitable sleeping environment helps prevent risks such as suffocation or sudden infant death syndrome

If you think your baby is too hot at night, adjusting the room temperature, checking the bedding, and choosing a suitable mattress is the first step to helping your child sleep better, and you can rest more peacefully too.
