Use and maintenance
Do you have questions about how long you can use the crib mattress with your baby? Don't know what size mattress to choose? Are you concerned about the hygiene of the mattress and want to know how to maintain it properly? You will find the answers to these frequently asked questions and many more in this section about the use and maintenance of our mattresses and accessories.
Do children's mattresses support the weight of an adult?
Our children's mattresses are perfectly capable of supporting the weight of an adult without any inconvenience. Regardless of whether they have one or two sides, their configuration and materials support weights of up to 100 kg on both sides.
It is essential to keep in mind that foam mattresses, while suitable, tend to become less firm over time due to the stretching of the foam. Spring mattresses are more durable and can support greater weights more effectively. Additionally, their breathability is much higher compared to foam mattresses.
In double-sided multi-stage mattresses, the function of each side is focused on the child's spine development according to their age, but weight does not influence their use.
In summary, you can sleep comfortably with your little one on any of our mattresses. However, if you are looking for optimal durability over the 10-year lifespan of the mattress, a spring mattress would be the most recommended option.
How do I know what size mattress is the right one?
To know what the ideal mattress size is, we recommend measuring the interior space of the crib beforehand. Some manufacturers design their cribs with spaces smaller than the published size. That is, even if the crib size is 120×60 cm, it is advisable to measure the interior space to confirm the usable area. If after measuring, the space is slightly smaller or you want more room to dress the crib, then you should choose the size 117×57 cm.
In the mini cribs or bassinets, the size is usually standardized. A variation of a centimeter more or less is negligible, the mattress will adapt to the
mini crib thanks to the flexible materials it is made of.
In case you need a special size, we could custom-make the Care mattress, both for crib and mini crib and bassinet.
For children's mattresses, choose the same size as the base or bed frame that you are going to use. In these models, we do not have custom manufacturing.
Until what age can the crib mattress be used?
The crib or bassinet is an ideal option for the newborn's rest. Its small size allows the baby to feel more secure, as they have spent many months in the mother's womb, in a quite limited space. By using the crib, we help the baby adapt to their new reality more easily.
The maximum use of the crib or bassinet is usually up to 6 months of age, although there are moms who extend it a little longer. In any case, our mattresses for cribs and carrycots are designed to support weights of between 8-10 kg.
Until what age can the crib mattress be used?
Each baby has a different growth rhythm, so there is no single possible answer. When you see that your baby is no longer comfortable, climbs the bars to get out of the crib and/or needs more space to sleep, that will be the ideal time to make the transition from the crib to a junior bed. This stage usually corresponds to around 2 years approximately, although our crib mattresses can be used up to 20 kg in weight.
Until what age can the children's mattress be used?
Children's mattresses have the ideal firmness for the growth stage that includes from approximately 2 years old until the transition to an adult mattress. There is no age limit for their use. We will detect when a change is necessary based on the child's development and comfort.
When the mattress stops being comfortable and/or the weight of the child or teenager causes it to sink significantly, it will be time to change the mattress. However, all mattresses have a durability of about 10 years from the start of their use, according to the hygiene standards recommended by ASOCAMA. We will ensure a good rest by changing the mattress when appropriate.
How to properly maintain the mattress?
In order to preserve all the properties of the mattress for as long as possible, we recommend following these instructions:
1. Air out the room daily. Mold stains on the mattress can be due to excess humidity, low temperature in the room, or lack of air circulation. It is advisable to ventilate well during the early hours of the day.
2. Wash the mattress cover regularly. Follow the washing instructions. Make sure that the zipper does not suffer impacts or damage during the process. Machine washing is allowed at a maximum of 30º. Air dry, without exposing it to nearby heat sources or a dryer.
3. The quality of our materials guarantees that the baby or child can use the product on the same side throughout its useful life. Double-sided mattresses can be flipped according to the weight guidelines for evolving mattresses and once a year for those with two equivalent sides. All mattresses can be rotated from head to foot.
4. Do not jump or stand on the mattress, as it could cause damage to the product.
5. Do not bend or force the corners of the mattress to place sheets or covers. Nor to move it, put it in an elevator, or carry it up the stairs.
6. Use a waterproof and breathable protector to prevent stains and moisture on the mattress. This will help keep liquids from reaching the mattress and increase its durability. When washing the protector, make sure it is completely dry before using it again. A damp protector could cause moisture stains on the mattress.
7. Do not place the mattress on a varnished base or tatami. These types of bases do not allow for good ventilation of the mattress.
8. In the case of crib and mini-crib mattresses, the usage time is directly related to the baby's growth. In the case of children's mattresses, it is recommended to change the sleeping equipment every 10 years. There are no sleeping products that fulfill their function indefinitely, as factors such as use and the passage of time cause the firmness, elasticity, and hygiene of the product to decrease.
9. It is recommended not to inherit the mini-crib and crib mattress to maintain proper hygiene, as these will always accumulate dust mites and bacteria that could cause skin irritations in the new baby.
How long can I keep the mattress rolled up inside its box?
You can leave the mattress in its original packaging for a maximum period of 30 days, but we recommend opening it in advance to check that everything is correct. Place it as soon as possible in a horizontal position so that the foam regains its original shape before first use. If you are not going to use it immediately, you could even leave it with the protective plastic.
In this way, if you discover any manufacturing defect or find that the size is not correct, you would be within the 30-night trial period for exchanges or returns.
How to remove stains from the mattress?
If the mattress is removable, you can put the cover in the washing machine always following the washing instructions. Machine washing is allowed at a maximum of 30 ºC, with air drying, without exposing it to nearby heat sources or dryer. In case the stain persists, we can follow the following steps:
1. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with water until you achieve a soapy paste.
2. Rub this mixture with a cloth on the mattress, without getting it too wet.
3. Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes.
4. Wipe with a cloth dampened in water to remove the product.
5. Let it dry near an open window or use a hairdryer on a cool setting.
You can also try following the same steps with white vinegar, instead of baking soda and water.
We cannot guarantee that the process will completely remove the stain. Ideally, whenever you think that stains may occur for any reason, you should use a waterproof and breathable protector for good maintenance of the mattress, in order to avoid moisture and unwanted stains.
Is it normal for the mattress to have a strange smell when opening it?
Every new product, freshly manufactured and unused, smells different, even if just a little. This can also happen with the mattress that has arrived at your home because we send it directly from the factory. But this smell is normal, it is not harmful and will disappear after a few days of use.
The smell may be due to the materials or treatments of the fabrics used in the manufacturing of the mattress, but there is no risk to the health of babies and children, as all materials and fabrics used in this mattress are free of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), glues, and adhesives, as indicated by the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification.
If you want to speed up the process of eliminating the new mattress smell, we recommend that you remove the protective plastic as soon as you receive it and let it air out for at least 6 hours before use. You can also place a fan in the room as an extra source of air that will help dissipate the mattress smell more quickly.
How to eliminate bad odors in the mattress?
The culprits of bad odors in the mattress are usually germs and bacteria. To eliminate them, the best thing to do is sprinkle a little baking soda on the surface of the mattress, let it act for 10 to 30 minutes, and then remove the baking soda with a vacuum cleaner.
If the odors are very deep and persistent: sprinkle the baking soda, cover it, and let it act overnight. The next morning, vacuum and spray with a little disinfectant.
How to properly store the mattress after use?
It is not recommended that mattresses be reused due to the fact that they tend to accumulate dust mites and bacteria over time. We cannot guarantee that, when stored, it can be kept in good hygienic condition, as these bacteria proliferate if we are not using it and ventilating it regularly.
The mattress could be stored after airing it out and washing its cover (it is recommended to store separately), in a breathable plastic, not too thick, to avoid moisture. The ideal position is horizontally, which will require more space. If we place the mattress vertically, gravity could cause damage to the materials.
Remember not to place it in a damp place, such as near the floor or ceiling, or in storage rooms or garages where moisture accumulation is greater, as the foam could oxidize.
When the mattress is to be used again, we advise airing it out beforehand for several hours. We remind you again that reusing a used mattress is not recommended.
How long do you have to wait to use the product once unboxed?
The mini crib and crib mattresses, as well as the pillows, regain their shape quickly, after a few minutes of being taken out of the packaging. We recommend washing the cover before first use (following the washing instructions) as, despite adhering to all hygiene standards during the manufacturing process, it will be safer for your baby. Once the cover is dry, the mattress will be ready for use.
The children's mattresses with foam core regain their shape in 1 or 2 hours, while pocket spring mattresses may take a few more hours to regain their original shape. After about 6 hours, any mattress is sure to be ready for use.
Our mattresses are shipped vacuum packed and rolled inside a protective plastic that allows them to remain in that state. As additional protection, we ship them inside a cardboard box to prevent any damage during transport. Furthermore, the rolled shipping facilitates handling, transport, and quick delivery.
What base can I use for the children's mattress?
As a base for any mattress, it is recommended that it be a firm and breathable base so that the mattresses can breathe and do not accumulate moisture, as well as to maintain their properties of firmness and comfort.
In the case of children's mattresses, the ideal is to use an upholstered base or slatted bed base, which can be used for both pocket spring mattresses and foam core mattresses.
Can I wash the mattress cover in the washing machine?
Hand washing with cold water is recommended. However, the mattress cover can also be washed in the washing machine at a maximum temperature of 30 ºC, on a delicate cycle and without spinning.
Use neutral detergents and without softeners. Strong softeners can cause irritation on the baby's skin.
Drying should be as natural as possible, in the air (without exposing to sunlight) and away from direct heat sources. Do not put in the dryer.
It is important to ensure that the zipper has not been damaged after each wash.
Can I wash the foam core in the washing machine?
The foam core of the mini crib and carrycot mattresses, as well as the foam of the topper (top part) of the Care and Care Ultimate crib mattresses, can be hand washed with cold water.
The washing machine on a short program can also be used for delicate items with cold water (no more than 30 ºC), neutral detergent, and no fabric softeners. Do not spin to avoid damaging the foam.
For drying, place the foam horizontally and never hold it with clips, as it could tear. Do not use a dryer or any other heat source (hair dryer, radiators, etc.). Air dry and do not expose to sunlight.
It can take up to 48 hours for the foam to dry completely. Before placing it back inside the cover, make sure it is completely dry.
It is not recommended to wash the foam bases of the crib and maxi crib mattresses.
