Is your baby not sleeping on vacation? 5 tips

¿Tu bebé no duerme en vacaciones? 5 consejos

Vacations are an exciting time for the whole family, but they can also present challenges, especially when it comes to your baby's sleep. Changes in routine, environment, and activities can affect your little one's sleep patterns. Is your baby not sleeping on vacation? Here are five practical tips to ensure that your baby continues to sleep peacefully even when you are on vacation.

Getting your baby to sleep well during the holidays may require a little planning and adaptability, but it will be worth it so that everyone can enjoy quality time together. By following these tips, you can help your baby maintain their sleep patterns and ensure that everyone has a relaxing and happy holiday.

Why doesn't my baby sleep on vacation?

Young children like to have regular schedules because they like to know what is going to happen. What happens during the holidays is basically a change in the baby's routine and schedule, which can make them feel a little lost.

Each child may react differently, depending on their personality. If your baby or child is very active and energetic, they may feel very uncomfortable if things do not continue as usual, and they may find it difficult to return to their routine after the holidays. On the other hand, if your baby is calmer and takes time to get used to new situations, it is normal for them to take longer to adapt to changes. However, they are likely to have fewer problems returning to their usual routine after the holidays. If your child is one of the latter, congratulations! These children generally have fewer sleep problems during the holidays.

If routines change, do not try to resolve the issue quickly in just two days, as this could make the situation worse.

5 tips for getting your baby to sleep on vacation

Maintain a relaxing routine

Replicate the same bedtime ritual you do at home. A relaxing bedtime routine can be a lifesaver in helping your baby feel comfortable and calm, even in a new place. This can include activities such as bathing your baby and reading them a gentle story before bedtime. These actions become cues for your baby that it is time to sleep, which can help calm them and ease the transition to sleep.

Maintain regular schedules and naps

Babies feel safe and comfortable when they have a consistent routine. During the holidays, try to maintain similar schedules for meals and naps, even if that means making some adjustments to your plans. This will help your baby adjust more easily and recognize when it is time to sleep.

It's not a big deal if your little one goes to bed a day later than usual. However, if they nap in different places and at different times each day, and go to bed much later for several days in a row, their schedule may become disorganized and that could complicate things. If your baby usually takes more than one nap, try to make sure that at least one of their naps is at home or at the hotel where you are staying.

If you want to change your baby's schedule, you can do so gradually, adjusting it in intervals of approximately 1 hour. For example, if their usual bedtime is 8:00 p.m., you can delay it to 9:00 p.m. for several days. This way, your baby will be able to gradually adapt to the new schedule.

This is important: your baby needs to take naps. If they don't sleep during the day, their nighttime sleep is likely to be affected. Naps are essential to prevent your little one from feeling too tired. If you notice that their naps are not providing enough rest because they are shorter than usual, consider putting them to bed a little earlier at night.

Create a suitable environment for sleep

In a new place, it is essential to create an environment that is conducive to your baby's sleep. Find a quiet, dark corner where your baby can rest. You can use curtains to block out light and reduce ambient noise. If possible, try to recreate the sleeping environment they have at home, such as using their crib and mattress.

However, we understand that this can sometimes be difficult, especially if you are staying in a hotel. In these cases, we suggest placing the crib as far away from your bed as possible, so that your baby has their own space and is not affected by any noise or movement in the room.

If you notice that your baby is having more difficulty falling asleep or is waking up more often than usual, we recommend that you act in the same way as you do at home. If you do not make any changes to the way you put them to sleep or try new methods, your baby will naturally adapt in just a few nights.

Bring objects that are familiar to you

Babies often find comfort in familiar objects, such as their favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or comforter. Bringing these objects with you on vacation can provide a sense of security and familiarity in an unfamiliar environment. These objects can be an emotional link that helps your baby relax and sleep better.

Be flexible and adapt.

Although it is important to maintain a certain routine, remember that vacations are a special time to enjoy with the family. If there are changes in the schedule due to activities or events, try to be flexible. Babies can sense their parents' emotions, so stay calm and offer them affection and reassurance when necessary.

During the summer and holidays, it is common for routines to change, and that's okay. There's no need to worry too much about it. In reality, your child is not suffering any problems because of the change in their schedule and habits. It may even be good for them to learn that sometimes there are special moments when daily routines change a little, and that's okay.

When planning vacations and days away from home, it is essential to put your baby's sleep needs first. This does not mean doing nothing, but it is preferable to do one activity per day so that your little one can process what they are experiencing and rest properly to have enough energy for the next day. Ultimately, by allowing your baby to rest when they need to and offering them a balance between activities and sleep, you can ensure that they enjoy their vacation to the fullest and are ready to face each day with vitality.
