Should babies use pillows?

¿Los bebés deben utilizar almohada?

One of the questions most frequently asked by new parents is whether babies should use pillows, or rather, at what age babies can start using pillows. For safety reasons, specialists advise against the use of pillows for newborns and infants, as well as the use of sheets, comforters, or anything else that could pose even the slightest risk of suffocation or choking while they sleep.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other child health organizations recommend that newborn babies sleep on their backs on a firm mattress in an empty crib, without pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, or any objects that could interfere with their breathing. This helps reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and promotes a safe sleeping environment. Using a pillow can increase the risk of the baby suffocating if their face sinks into the pillow or becomes entangled in it.

The first year

In addition to the risk of suffocation due to the baby's constant movements, the use of pillows is not recommended during the first year of life because babies sleep more comfortably on a flat surface.

During the first months and years of life, babies are still developing their bone and muscle structure, including the spine. The use of a pillow can interfere with the natural alignment of the spine and compromise its proper development.

Babies have a natural curve at the back of their heads, known as the supine position. This is because they spend a lot of time lying on their backs during the first few months, which is the recommended sleeping position. Using a pillow can push the baby's head forward or into an uncomfortable position, altering the natural alignment of the spine and affecting their posture.

From two years of age

The general recommendation is that babies should not use pillows until they are able to move and change position on their own during sleep, which usually occurs around 24 months. At this age, children's body morphology has developed so that they are comfortable with a pillow and have enough strength and control to adjust their head and body while sleeping, reducing the risk of suffocation.

However, it is important to note that each child's needs and abilities are different, so it is essential to follow safety guidelines and consult with your pediatrician before introducing a pillow. Some children may need a pillow before the age of 2 for specific reasons, such as respiratory or medical problems, but this should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

When it's time to introduce a pillow for your little one, it's important to choose one that's appropriate for their age and size. Opt for a low, soft pillow designed specifically for young children that provides adequate support for their head and neck. Avoid bulky, excessively high pillows or those with fillings that could pose a safety risk to your child.

While it is normal for adults and older children to use pillows for sleeping, it is important to remember that babies have different and special needs in terms of safety while they sleep.
