When to eliminate nighttime feedings?

¿Cuándo eliminar las tomas nocturnas?

Breastfeeding is an essential stage in a baby's development. However, there comes a time when mothers consider night weaning. When is the best time to eliminate night feedings? Did you know that there are signs that indicate your baby is ready for night weaning? Read on to discover some practical tips for a smooth and successful transition.

What are night feeds?

Night feedings are those times when the baby wakes up during the night to feed. In the first months of life, these feedings are crucial for the baby's growth and development.

The connection between sucking (the breast) and sleep is very strong in babies. For them, the breast (or bottle) is not only for feeding, but also for falling asleep more easily. Sucking provides them with pleasure, relaxation, and well-being, helping them to fall asleep quickly and effectively.

When to eliminate nighttime feedings?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer for all babies, as each has its own pace of development. However, there are some common signs that may indicate that your baby is ready to eliminate night feedings:

  • Baby's age: Many experts suggest that between 6 and 9 months of age, most babies are physically ready to go through the night without feeding. At this age, they have usually reached an adequate weight and their stomachs are able to store enough food to keep them full for longer.
  • Sleep patterns: If your baby can already sleep for 6 to 8 hours straight without waking up to feed, it may be a sign that they are ready for night weaning.
  • Solid food intake: Once your baby starts eating solid foods regularly, their need for nighttime feedings may decrease. Introducing these foods helps keep them full for longer.
  • General development: Observe whether your baby shows signs of satiety and well-being during the day. If they are growing and gaining weight normally, they are probably ready to eliminate nighttime feedings.

Tips for successful night weaning

Once you have decided that the time is right for night weaning, there are several strategies you can use to make the transition as smooth as possible for you and your baby:

  1. Gradual reduction: Instead of eliminating nighttime feedings all at once, gradually reduce the amount of time your baby spends feeding at night. For example, if you normally breastfeed or bottle-feed for 10 minutes, reduce to 8 minutes for a few days, then to 6 minutes, and so on.
  2. Delay the last feeding of the day: Give the last feeding before bedtime quite late and bring forward the breakfast feeding. Maintain at least these two feedings and, if possible, away from the bed.
  3. Increase daytime intake: Make sure your baby gets enough food during the day. Offer more frequent feedings, and if they are already eating solid foods, make sure their meals are nutritious and satisfying.
  4. Let dad comfort him: When the baby starts crying, let dad go and comfort him. The child associates the smell and presence of the mother with breastfeeding, so if you are the one who goes to calm him down, he will expect you to breastfeed him.
  5. Look for alternatives to comfort: Babies often seek nighttime feedings not only because they are hungry, but also for comfort or because they have woken up and want to go back to sleep. These are therefore emotional feedings rather than nutritional ones. Try to offer other forms of comfort, such as hugs, a pacifier, or a comfort object.
  6. Patience and consistency: Night weaning can take time and will not always be a linear process. There will be nights when your baby may wake up and look for food. Stay calm and be patient.

Night weaning is an important stage in breastfeeding that requires patience and sensitivity. Listening to your baby's cues and taking a gradual, step-by-step approach can make this process easier. Remember that every baby is unique, and the most important thing is to make sure they feel safe and loved during this transition.

Don't hesitate to consult your pediatrician or a child sleep consultant if you have any questions or concerns about night weaning. With the right support, you can make informed decisions that benefit both you and your baby.
