One of the most frequently asked questions we get from moms and dads is how to choose the right size crib mattress. But before you know what size mattress is best for your baby, you also need to ask yourself what type of bed you are going to choose: a carrycot, a mini crib, or a crib?

What type of bed is best for a newborn baby?

Above all, newborn babies must sleep on a safe surface. The choice of bed for your baby will depend mainly on safety, comfort, and how long they will use that bed before moving on to a larger one.

Up to 6 months old, babies can feel safer and more secure in a mini crib mattress or bassinet. Its small size adapts to the size of the baby and reminds them of the months they spent in their mother's womb.

However, babies grow very quickly, and before you know it, they will need a larger crib mattress. Around 6 months, your baby will start to stand up on their own and will need a crib with bars to prevent falls. The crib mattress is ideal for babies from 6 months to 2 or 3 years old, although you can also use it from birth.

What are the appropriate crib mattress measurements?

As you will have seen, the most important thing is the baby's safety and that they sleep on a surface that is large enough to allow them to move around without risk.

The most commonly used dimensions for crib mattresses are 120x60 cm and 140x70 cm for maxi cribs. However, you will see that at ECUS Kids we have another slightly smaller size: 117x57 cm. Do you know why?

At ECUS Kids, we always recommend that our customers measure the interior of the crib beforehand, both in width and length. Some manufacturers design cribs with interior dimensions smaller than the measurements they publish.

For example, the crib manufacturer may tell you that the crib you are buying is 120x60 cm. However, you should check whether this is indeed the actual size of the interior space to confirm the usable space available for the mattress. If, when measured, the space is less than 120x60 cm, then you will need to buy a crib mattress measuring 117x57 cm.
