Tips for better sleep as a mom

Consejos para dormir mejor siendo mamá

The arrival of a baby is a wonderful thing, but it can be exhausting. If we ask any new mother what she wants most, she will tell us that she wants to sleep through the night. Adjusting to babies' sleeping patterns is difficult, as their sleep is very fragmented. Whether it's your first, second, or third child, lack of rest is always a problem for mothers, especially when their children are very young.

6 tips to help moms sleep too

  1. Sleep when your baby sleeps. Or at least try to. Twenty-minute naps may be enough to help you get through the day.
  2. Go outside. Remember to go out every day. The fresh air will wake you up and give you energy.
  3. Remember to get some sunlight. Go for a walk first thing in the morning in summer or at midday in winter. Natural sunlight is good for both you and your baby.
  4. It is better to be a little cold at home than to be hot. Why? Because a little cold will keep you awake and active during the day. If you have a high temperature at home, you will be sleepy all day and unable to rest at night.
  5. Watch your meals. A heavy meal can make you feel tired and sleepy all day. Avoid chocolate and energy bars as much as possible. Opt for healthier alternatives such as fruit, raw vegetables, or nuts.
  6. Stay hydrated. Hydration is important, so always keep a bottle of water nearby. If you find it difficult to drink water, you can add a few slices of lemon or orange to make your own flavored water.

Most frequent concerns of moms who don't let them rest

Furthermore, at ECUS Kids, we know what keeps all moms awake at night. Take note and take action to get your rest back:

  • You're afraid you won't hear the baby cry. You're afraid you'll sleep so deeply that you won't hear your little one cry. But trust us, you'll hear them cry. And if not, you can always use a sleep monitor or baby monitor.
  • The laundry pile never ends. And you have to accept that. Household chores with a new baby are not always finished or even possible. It is more important to sleep and be rested so you can take good care of your baby than to vacuum the house every day.
  • Visits that never end. With the arrival of a baby, visits can be endless. Everyone wants to visit you. Just set some limits on visits. Don't feel bad about it. Your baby needs to rest, and so do you.
  • Postpartum depression. It is normal for many mothers to experience mood swings or postpartum depression after giving birth. Don't be afraid to discuss your mood with your doctor; they will help you.
  • Older children to care for. If there are already older children at home, caring for them is still a necessity. And sleeping when the baby sleeps will not always be possible. So take advantage of when the baby is asleep to be with the older siblings and devote your time to them. They may be jealous of the new baby, so it is important to pay attention to them, play with them, read a book with them... so that they do not feel left out.

Remember that this new stage will not last forever. There will come a time when your baby will be able to tell the difference between day and night, and will gradually sleep for longer periods of time. Among our tips for sleeping as a mom, we cannot forget the most important one: take a few minutes for yourself every day. It doesn't matter if it's a bubble bath, going swimming or to the gym for 30 minutes, writing, painting... With all this, we are sure that moms will be able to sleep better every night.
