Sleep cycles in babies

Ciclos de sueño en bebés

One of the most challenging but also fascinating aspects of raising a baby is managing their sleep. Babies have unique sleep patterns that can vary significantly from day to day and from child to child. Understanding these sleep cycles is essential to ensuring adequate rest for both baby and parents.

Babies also go through vital stages. Sleep cycles in babies, like feeding, are a biological necessity that are subject to different changes in phases and cycles depending on our baby's growth.

The sleep stages of a baby

  • Light sleep: Like adults, babies also go through phases of light sleep. During this stage, they are more likely to wake up easily to any stimulus, such as noise or light. Babies may move, moan, or even open their eyes during this phase.
  • Deep sleep: This stage is crucial for restful sleep. During deep sleep, babies are calmer and less likely to wake up to external stimuli. The baby's body and brain are actively working on growth and development during this phase.
  • Rapid Eye Movement (REM): Like adults, babies experience REM sleep, during which rapid eye movements occur under closed eyelids. This stage is associated with dreaming and cognitive processing. Babies spend more time in REM sleep than adults, which is vital for their brain development.

What are the sleep cycles in babies?

  • From 3 to 6 months. Sleep phases begin to be organized around walks, baths, and meals. During this stage, the baby does not enter the deep sleep phase directly, making it easier to wake up and more sensitive to any slight noise or movement.
  • From 8 to 24 months. During this stage, babies begin to learn to sleep, and nighttime awakenings become less frequent. During this period, it is common for babies to feel strange and demand our presence in order to sleep.
  • From 2 to 5 years old. At this stage, the child's sleep improves considerably. Between the ages of 3 and 4, naps help them to be more rested at night and fall asleep more easily. From the age of 5 onwards, children hardly wake up at night, although this depends greatly on each individual child.
